2 Drug Abuse Treatment Options

When you feel that you are ready to get some help with your substance use and abuse, there are several ways that you can do it. That allows you to look around and find an option or combination of options that can help you fight your substance abuse problems and come out healthy the other side.

12 Step Programs

There are a variety of 12 step programs out there. The groups can specialize in working with different categories of addicts, such as alcoholics, people who use narcotics, or gamblers. However, they all work on the same basic theory. The theory is that working through the program and taking all the steps in order will help those people who are either trying to kick their habit or are trying to stay clean and sober. The programs also use sponsors, who are people who have been in the program for a long time and have a long history of sobriety. New members are able to call their sponsors when they are having problems or are in a bad situation.

In-Patient Rehab

Another option is to go to an in-patient rehab center. These centers offer a more intense program. If you are still using any substance when you go in, the rehab center will help you detox safely. It can be dangerous to go cold-turkey with some substances, so the medical staff will help you step it down safely until the substance is out of your system. Once you are completely clean, you will be able to start fully participating in the entire program.

There are a number of things that are generally involved in one of these programs. That can include things like mental health counseling, especially if you have a co-morbid illness which could feed into your addiction; group counseling, where you will be able to talk to others who are struggling with some of the same issues; and family counseling. Generally, as you progress in your program, your family and friends will be brought in as well. That will help to figure out any triggers that you will need to work on and how to avoid situations that could cause a backslide.

If you are ready to get clean and sober, there are many different treatment programs that you can choose from. Not all programs work for all people, so don't be disappointed if you have to try several options or combinations to find the one that works for you.
